Embracing Our Homeschool Journey: How to Find your Routines and Resources to find more time with your Family

Updated: Aug 13

As a mom navigating the world of homeschooling, you may feel overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of resources and methods available. Finding the right path can seem daunting, but I’ve discovered that establishing clear routines and gathering suitable resources can turn your homeschooling experience into a fulfilling adventure. In this post, I’ll share the effective routines I've developed that to meet you family’s needs but also give you the confidence to move forward together.

Understanding Your Family's Needs

Every family is unique, and identifying your specific needs is the first step in creating a successful homeschooling environment. Spent time reflecting on your children’s interests and learning styles. For instance, noticing that one of my students lights up when I use stories, while another loves to be the one to demonstrate the hands-on activities. Recognizing this allowed me to tailor our lessons, making learning engaging and enjoyable for all.

To enhance our learning, I all in projects that fit their interests, and are available in our back yard and community. For instance, when we studied ecosystems, we took a field trip to a local nature reserve. There, we observed different habitats, collected samples, and even took pictures for our nature journals. This not only captivated their attention but also helped them comprehend complex concepts in a real-world context.

A Daily Routine that's Right for You

Creating a daily routine has been crucial in providing structure to your homeschooling days. Crafting a flexible schedule that includes time for lessons, breaks, and creative activities. This routine helps us stay organized and ensures we cover essential subjects without stress.

The three hour work cycle in the morning is ideal and the goal! Find your timing to get everyone up and ready and fed, and then transition to 'learning time'. Set that routine to change into clothes, make the bed, and consider that start time of the 3 hour work period.

Planning Lessons Effectively

Once you find a routine that works for you, write it down and stick to it. Children thrive on routine. You may get bored and want to switch it up, but I promise it does not help their sense of order. Set that three-hour work cycle in the morning and once they are working more and more their own, turn your focus to expanding your resource list.

To streamline my lesson planning, allocate a few hours each week to prepare. Gather materials, outline objectives, and create checklists of activities for each subject. This preparation saves time during the week and boosts my confidence when guiding my children through their lessons. For instance, when you studied the solar system, you might source a physical model to build a solar system to scale of the distance, or use clay to build the layers of the planet, giving your child a multi-faceted understanding of the topic.

Taking Learning Out into the World

One of the most rewarding elements of homeschooling is the chance to extend learning beyond the home. Think about potential field trips, like the science museum where children can interact with exhibits, learning about physics through hands-on experiments. These experiences have made learning more vibrant and memorable.

Embracing Our Journey Together

Finding routines and resources that suit your family's needs will transform your homeschooling adventure. Through structured yet flexible routines, thoughtful lesson planning, and real-world experiences, you can build the confidence to navigate this unique path.

To all homeschooling caregivers out there, remember you are not alone. Embrace your journey, trust your instincts, and seek support from others. Together, we can empower our families to thrive in this beautiful learning experience.

As we continue to explore, learn, and grow, I look forward to seeing where our journey takes us next. Here’s to enthusiastically embracing homeschooling adventures!
